BlackRock Director, Greater China Lead - BlackRock Alternatives Specialist Team in Hong Kong, Hong Kong

About this role

Blackrock Alternatives Specialists Team (AST) helps BlackRock’s clients gain access to the investment teams, resources and strategies within our Alternatives strategies group, BlackRock Alternative Investors (BAI), and are tasked with delivering Alternatives-focused solutions that help to solve for our clients specific Alternative Investment requirements. Members of AST have deep knowledge of Alternatives capabilities which help to drive specialist to specialist conversations. AST works in partnership with the firm’s relationship managers within the Institutional Wealth Client Businesses to drive engagement with clients in respect of our Alternatives capabilities. By ensuring that we have high caliber specialists, AST can improve our bandwidth and depth of client relationship.

Reporting to the Head of BlackRock Alternatives Specialists APAC, this role will be responsible for capital formation of BlackRock's suite of Alternatives products and capabilities in Greater China focusing on Institutional Investors.

You will have developed product knowledge across a variety of illiquid and liquid alternatives capabilities and will therefore be conversant across BlackRock’s entire Alternatives product set, leveraging specialist expertise in each area to develop new business opportunities and ultimately drive accelerated Alternatives AUM Growth.

Job Purpose/Background:

  • Represent the entire platform and take ownership for the success of Alternatives in Greater China;

  • Cover the largest alts buyers in Greater China and take responsibility for the relationship with each client (originating sales, pipeline management, cross-selling and leading all aspects of client service);

  • Maintain oversight of all Alts activity in Greater China;

  • Own the annual Alts sales budget for Greater China and develop the strategic direction across all Alts asset classes, undertaking client segmentation and prioritization, consideration and development of local structures, and developing marketing strategy and the BAI brand across Greater China;

  • Act as a conduit for AST to Greater China Client Business in terms of content and information;

  • Pre-qualify all alts opportunities and steer towards correct Asset Class specialist Alts team to progress further;

  • Maintain a positive relationship with Alts Asset Class Specialists to set out plan for specific asset classes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Building a coherent Alts engagement strategy for Greater China;

  • Mapping key Alts buyers and their specific investment requirements, including key decision makers;

  • Developing account plans for APAC Strategic Alternatives Partnership Plan (ASAPP) Clients and taking responsibility for overall delivery of account plan

  • Direct coverage of Head of Alts/Private Markets of the largest Alts buyers in country/region. Partnership with Client Business to cover C-suite level Alts-focused conversations;

  • Preparation for and undertaking of Alts-focused client meetings, introducing overall BAI platform, delivering market-oriented thought leadership and driving thematic discussion ahead of Asset Class Specialists being brought into live opportunities;

  • Represent BAI at internal and external regional client events;

  • Alts Prospecting & pre-qualifying client business derived Alts leads across Greater China region;

  • Alts Product development and competitor intelligence, providing coordinated demand assessment feedback for new BAI product launches;

  • Identifying cross-selling opportunities to broaden Alts relationships with existing Greater China clients with particular focus on ‘ASAPPs’ and ‘National Champions’ who have potential to move the dial;

  • Coordination of BAI sales campaigns across region in partnership with Asset Class Specialists and Client Business;

  • Negotiation of commercial terms in partnership with Investment teams and client business for new alternatives mandates;

  • Sales Enablement of Client Business to provide greater leverage across longer-tail of clients

  • Maintenance of BAI Sales pipeline using a CRM, Airtable etc.

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Extensive prior experience within asset management or financial services industry. A background of marketing Alternative Investments would be strongly preferred;

  • A seasoned, strategic business developer; comfortable leveraging a complex organization to meet their fundraising objectives and meet client needs;

  • Capable of managing teams and projects where required in order to deliver results;

  • Capacity to move fluently between tasks, handling clients, relationship managers and portfolio managers in parallel to provide value added perspective and deliverables;

  • Ability to demonstrate clear awareness of key issues in the Alternatives markets affecting Institutional and Wealth investors from both an investment, service and regulatory perspective;

  • Strong intellectual ability and interpersonal skills to harness and leverage their credibility with their peers and senior leaders throughout the Firm as well as the investor community;

  • Partnership orientated – Demonstrates a collaborative and cooperative approach to tasks;

  • A strong team player with experience of managing multiple internal stakeholders both regionally and globally;

  • Demonstrate a real passion for Alternatives;

  • Understand key drivers of success and a working knowledge of our competitors;

  • Ability to lead by example – high ethical standards and strong work ethic;

  • CFA or CAIA designations preferred;

  • Fluent English and Mandarin essential (both oral and written), additional regional Asian language skills will be welcomed.
