About this role

As Global Head of Database Engineering and Operations you’ll lead a team that works closely with BlackRock’s Production and Web Engineering and Operations teams to design, deploy, configure, and optimize our enterprise data management platforms. You’ll hold accountability for our high performing, 24 / 7 data environment of sql and no-sql data stores. BlackRock’s data management platforms underpin our internal asset management business as well as our industry leading SAAS platform, Aladdin, used by hundreds of the world largest financial institutions to run their business. The platforms consist of 1,000+ database instances, 1PB+ storage processing over 1,000,000+ transactions per second. You will lead initiatives to enhance the agility and scalability of the firm’s entire data management platforms including a targeted re-platforming and continued implementation of DevOps and SRE principles.

Whether it’s in the cloud or in our data centers; your team ensures our data layer performs superbly. You’ll solve complex problems, continuously improve operational data processes, and automate to ensure scale and consistency.

Key responsibilities:

  • Share responsibility for architecting and implementing the firms data management platforms

  • Own responsibility availability, scalability, performance and capacity from development through production

  • Reduce errors on deployments, improve reliability, and increase speed of implementation through automation

  • Continuously refine and improve our toolset to improve our data and persistence layers

  • Mentor and develop team members to adopt RDBMS, NoSQL, and Big Data platforms

Core Requirements:

  • Practitioner of DevOps/SRE principles

  • Proven experience with SQL, NoSQL, Big Data, and Public Cloud database technologies

  • Use metrics to drive decision making

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Ability to build relationships with teams in geographically disperse locations

  • Enjoys a fast paced and complex environment, troubleshooting time sensitive critical issues and working with people


  • Lead a 60+ global team with footprints in North America, Europe and Asia

  • Lead and grow a new team in one of BlackRock’s newest locations

  • Coordinate and plan with your peers in other offices around the globe

  • Manage and lead complex projects

  • Communicate effectively to senior managers


  • 5+ years of experience in senior technical leadership roles

  • Bachelor’s (Master’s preferred) degree in computer science or engineering field preferred
